should you submit a story?

if this project speaks to you, it is for you.

We are looking for stories of, or reflections on, sexual injustice experienced during coming of age- the process of coming into and growing on from girlhood. We hope you’ll share your story.

How we are defining girlhood:

Short answer, we’re not.

We recognize the binaried language of this project. We also recognize that gender does not exist on a binary, nor is it a static thing. We will not limit the experience of girlhood with an exact definition of age or gender, create boundaries as to what does and does not count. If you have had an experience with girlhood and coming of age, however you define it for yourself, then this project is for you. No one will be turned away.

How we are defining sexual injustice:

Any situation in which one experiences interpersonal or systemic injustice related to sex.

We will not be using the word “sex” in the common patriarchal and heteronormative understanding of the word, connoting penetrative intercourse. Instead “sex” will reference a wide range of experiences within sexual contexts, including ALL degrees of physical sexual activity.

why participate?

To speak your mind. to control your narrative. to offer your words up to someone who might need them. to let something out quietly. to take up space that you have been denied. to learn, to teach, to connect.

We hope that the experience of telling your story in your own way will not only offer a pathway for resistance, but that by collecting and expressing  our stories together, we can reveal untold narratives and unify through the shared memories of sex and girlhood.

We understand that these moments can be difficult to reflect on, and that not every reason for participating will speak to you - but they do not all need to. This is a space of rawness and honesty; for anger, joy, sadness, fear, confusion, jubilance, or whatever you may need. It is your space.

What will we do with your story?

We will not edit or alter your story in any way.

When submitting, you will have the choice to share your story just for the sake of sharing, with out having it posted online or included in our installation. You may also select to have it only posted online, only displayed in the installation, or both.

Stories submitted online to be included in the installation will be printed out.

Stories to be included in the installation will be made into books, put into envelopes and left to be discovered in the house’s mail box, hung on the walls, and otherwise incorporated.
